NEPTUNE Shorts M90AW
During a couple of years we had this shorts desire…now the time came to make it happen!
I wanted a pair of shorts that I could have on the beach, swim in and also use when “off beaching” for lunch, travel back and forth etc. I would not mind if they also had many pockets and had an overall cool look!
I had a ground idea that there would be no leg end bands that are so popular, they only tend to absorb water and making the shorts drip longer down your leg… not so great so that feature had to go ASAP!
Another thing that crossed my mind was having an elastic cord with a cord lock in the waist which is easier to adjust – instead of normal string cotton or nylon…. or the dreaded cotton flat band (often same as on leg end) which never dries up and creates a big “BIG” knot when tied securely, even this would reduce unnecessary dripping and make the waist area dry up faster.. and yes! preferably baking in the sun on a white sandy beach somewhere 😉
Pockets – I like pockets.. I wanted them to have normal waist pockets made with the “custom”!? netted lining, cargo pockets on thighs and a back pocket.. I would settle on just one back pocket because two would make them just to much normal shorts – pants with cut off legs and these would still have the feel of swimming shorts when in water and “real” shorts when standing in que for the “cooled one”s served in the beach bar… at least this was the thought!
For the camo part, this was a real tough one.. the green M90 pattern felt just to common and print on such fine fabric with all the sun, water and sand = heavy bleach, we discarded it early on.
Instead the real trouble became choosing between M90 desert pattern and our M90 Arctic Winter pattern.. of course we wanted both.. don’t you always want more!? But… money talks and in the end we settled for the AW pattern (but note.. we never lost the thought of or have put Shorts on the shelf forever!).
Because these would be a type of recreational shorts there was openings for having labels – patches on them and I had the idea of adding a Swedish flag patch in the same size as a Swedish Armed Forces national arm patch on the left thigh pocket. The flag patch is something we since then consider and have used on other products like the Thermal Cap M90 for instance; surely you will see more of this type of “patching” on our gear in the future.
The name was a thing of its own also, we considered TRIDENT for some time and possibly we will savor this name for some future maritime product!? POSEIDON was another… but the chosen one has melted in nicely in our product range: NEPTUNE!
The shorts idea was in the end stretched over more time than it was planned, we tried with several manufacturers but they could not match what we wanted and over time there was some frustration..but we solved it!
It was also the matter of when to manufacture them etc etc, can you release shorts in the middle of winter!? (in Sweden that is.. you guys and girls on Bora Bora could disregard this section ;)… hmm not only a joke, we do have sold to a customer on Fiji.. how awesome is that – he didn´t by the shorts thou), could you have boxes in warehouse in the wait for spring/summer without releasing them = non economic and no fun at all.
The release issue is something we now have put way behind us, you will see summer gear released in mid winter and vice versa, the H&M season catalogue with perfectly timed clothes and accessories will never happen at us..!
Then as you know.. the shorts came through in the end, and was released in late autumn 2011.
As of now, when writing this.. only one pair of these unique shorts are left in stock!
Some responses and feedback of the shorts has filtered back to us with some pointers like:
The leg openings was to tight for training leg work out in them, The AW pattern felt weird being a winter type for use in sunny days etc etc.. We have noted them all and consider some of it.. but it is a hard part pleasing everybody and we will see in the future what can come along in the way of shorts and what design changes and features they might have!
I hope you enjoyed reading about or NEPTUNE Shorts M90AW!
